A weekend for a student-athlete at Los Fresnos isn’t really a break, it’s just a different kind of an activity. While other regular students relax and sit back and watch TV during the weekends, athletes are either going to practice, traveling to their games or cramming up on homework that piled up over the week. Maximizing every minute for a student-athlete is crucial, whether it’s in the classroom or on the field.
It takes serious dedication to balance both schoolwork, family, and sports, especially during those rough weeks when they have several games a week and you have major assignments due. They learn discipline and time management skills, which is crucial for the real world. Sometimes it may feel overwhelming, but knowing they’re not alone in it makes a huge difference.
Sophomore Samuel Benavidez shared his thoughts on how he balances his life of being a student-athlete.
“For me, I have a schedule that has my workout times and other things that I need to get done” Benavidez said. “I don’t have time to relax or have fun with my family and friends, but whenever I do it is a refresher for me.”
Senior Albert Barrera has a lot of experience with the balance of being a student-athlete.
“I do my work on time and make sure everything gets done,” Barrera said. “I also have a schedule for everything I have to get done.”
