This past Sunday was Super Bowl LVIII (58), pitting the San Francisco 49ers vs. the Kansas City Chiefs. The San Francisco 49ers had a great regular football season, with 14 wins and only 6 losses to that point, while the Chiefs were looking to repeat as Super Bowl champs and had amassed 15 wins and 6 losses to advance to the Super Bowl.
Everyone knew the Super Bowl was going to be a competitive game. The first start of the quarter was close with both teams playing great defense and the score being 0-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was when both teams finally had a score on the board, with the 49ers winning 10-3 at halftime. The whole game took a huge turn around in the third quarter, with the Chiefs tying the game by scoring 10 points in the quarter and taking a 13-10 lead headed into the fourth quarter.
After a slow start offensively, both teams got on track as they headed into the decisive fourth quarter, making most fans nervous not knowing who would win,.
San Francisco took the lead, making the score 16-13, but missed a critical extra point, which would’ve given them a 17-13 lead. The Chiefs tied the game up again 16-16 after a field goal, leaving San Francisco with time to take the lead. They had a chance to ice the game with a first down and kick a field goal with no time left, but the Chiefs were able to stop them, forcing the 49ers to settle for a field goal and a 19-16 lead. Patrick Mahomes nearly won the game in regulation, but the Chiefs kicked a tying field goal to make it a 19-19 game, and sending the game to overtime. In a highly debated decision, San Francisco won the coin toss and chose to receive the ball. The offense got all the way down to the Chiefs nine yard line, but had to settle for a field goal, giving the 49ers a 22-19 lead. The Chiefs had their turn with the ball and advanced down to the three yard line with only eight seconds left in overtime.
Mahomes tricked the 49ers on a pass to the right side, and threw a touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman for the game ending touchdown and making the Chiefs the first back-to-back Super Bowl Champion in 20 years.
While the title was the Chiefs third in five years, the heartbreaking loss had 49ers fans feeling miserable about about losing such a close Super Bowl after a great season.
