Due to the coronavirus outbreak many Halloween activities have been put on hold, but that doesn’t mean the residents of Texas are unable to enjoy the holiday festivities with activities that are safe for the entire family. With Halloween just around the corner, people are asking what kind of precautions and events will take place for the holiday with the virus out and about. Not to worry, this year can be just as eventful and entertaining even with a pandemic in the way.

Many Halloween events have been cancelled this year due the pandemic such as parties and trick or treating have been prohibited. There are many safe events that families and friends can enjoy safely during the holiday. While the annual festivities such as trick or treating and Gladys Porter Zoo’s ‘Boo at the Zoo’, the 5K Zombie Run and Monster Mile, Dog park Howl-0-ween, other activities such as the Spooktacular Trick or Treat Drive Through and Los Fresnos Trick or Treating Drive Through are still on.

Both drive trough events will be on Halloween Saturday, October 31. The Spooktacular Trick or Treat Drive Through will be from 5:30 to 8:00 pm in San Benito and is being hosted by the San Benito rotary club. The San Benito Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring the event and asks for others to set up their own section to give out candy during the event. The Spooktacular Trick or Treat Drive Thru will be held at the San Benito football stadium with the permission of superintendent of schools, Dr. Nate Carman.

The Los Fresnos Halloween drive through festival will be from 6 to 8:30 pm, hosted by the City of Los Fresnos, Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Corporation, and the Rodeo Committee. Both events require mandatory masks and other safety precautions in order to prevent the spread of the virus during the events. The location of the Los Fresnos drive through has changed from the city’s Memorial Park to the Rodeo Grounds due to the pandemic.

On October 10, 2020 Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino stated that they do not authorize any social events that could endanger anyone’s health. Judge Trevino states that he and the rest of the county would rather not risk the spread of the virus due to any public holiday festivities. The San Benito club will be looking for any donations for supplies from any businesses and organizations across town. Any kind of donations, volunteer work, or station for treats at the event will be open for anyone that would like to donate. The city of Los Fresnos Secretary, Jacqueline Moya, says that any churches, organizations, or businesses are allowed to take part in the event.
