The Lady Falcons Volleyball team has had a tremendous run in the RGV this season as they aim to repeat as district champions.
They are currently ranked #5 in the latest RGV polls, as they are sporting a 19-10 record, including a 5-2 mark in district play as of October 23.
They started off the non-district season very strong with getting 2nd in the Silver Bracket at the McHi Poundfest tournament and 1st place at the BISD Tournament. At one point, the Falcons were on a 10-game winning streak.
District play for the Falcons has been very successful thus far. The Lady Falcons went 4-0 for the first round of district sweeping every team except the Brownsville Veterans Chargers. The Falcons opened up round two of district with a sweep against San Benito, before losing the last two games against Brownsville Veterans and Harlingen.
Stat leaders for the falcons are Senior Emily Cargill averaging 12.1 kills per game, Junior Lyla Trejo averaging 11.3 kills per game, Junior Natali Lozano averaging 7.4 kills per game. The Falcons offense is led by Junior Jaylynn Brown who averages 28.1 assists per game.
“From August to now, I’ve seen us grow so much as a team. I’m so grateful for everyone on this team and I can’t be prouder of these people and how they each contribute to the team,” senior Isa De La Cruz said.
“After Saturday’s loss, I think it showed how strong our team truly is. I think we are very good at holding each other and ourselves accountable and not pointing fingers,” De La Cruz said after Saturday’s game.
This season has been a remarkable year for head coach, Anissa Lucio. Earlier this season, Coach Lucio surpassed 300 wins. Coach Lucio has been coaching for 13 years, with four years spent at Weslaco high school, four years at Harlingen South high school, and this year is her fifth years in Los Fresnos.
“It is a collective thing. It wasn’t just me. I want to thank all my players, all my ex-players, and current players, my coaching staff – this is a celebration for everyone,” Lucio said.
The Falcons will wrap up their district season against the Hanna Eagles on October 25 before starting the playoffs the following week.
