The Los Fresnos Falcons Varsity Football team is enjoying an undefeated start to the season as they seek back-to-back 32-6A district championships and a deep playoff run.
The undefeated Falcons (7-0) started district play last week at the San Benito Greyhounds with a 42-25 win at Bobby Morrow Stadium. The Falcons now set their sights on the Brownsville Veterans Chargers, who are 7-1 and coming off a win against the Hanna Eagles. The Falcons check in at #2 in the KRGV Channel 5 Power Poll, while the Chargers are ranked #6.
Last year the Falcons defeated the Chargers in 24-21 thriller at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville, by blocking a field goal in the last seconds of the game after a hit stick fumble that was returned for a touchdown.
The Falcons have only experienced one close game so far this season, with a dramatic goal-line stand against the Edinburg Bobcats to seal a 21-15 victory at Leo Aguilar Stadium.
Falcons Head Coach David Cantu said that the Falcons need to get off to a hot start in order to take control of the game. Both defense and offense have to execute each drive and push their way to either the end zone or keep them away from the 1st down marker.
”Last year we got off to kind of a, you could say, a bad start,” Cantu said. “We were down 21-3 and had to make a comeback and our defense showed incredible perseverance. Our goal this year is to get off to a better start by taking advantage of our offensive possessions.”
Junior running back Tyler Stachowiak said that this game will be meaningful.
“This game will decide the district title,” Stachowiak said. “We have been running different formations and styles of offense to keep them guessing.”
Junior safety Ryan Prepejchal said that if the Chargers have an explosive play on offense, they have to be able to flush it and focus on the next one.
”As a captain on defense, you know, after a big play, I keep my boys locked in by just having short term memory, you know, you got to flush it, especially in the secondary,” Prepejchal said. “They will have big plays, its part of the game, but we have to learn how to not let that affect us mentally, move on to the next play because there is more football left in the game.”
After the game against the Chargers, the Falcons will travel to face the Harlingen Cardinals on Halloween night, followed by the final district game of the season at home against the Hanna Eagles on November 7.
