The Los Fresnos 2025 baseball team is riding high into the second round of the playoffs against Laredo United South.
The Falcons claimed the 32-6A District championship for the fourth straight year before sweeping La Joya in the bi-district round last week.
The Falcons completed the district season undefeated with an 8-0 record before defeating La Joya 2-0. The Falcons will now play Laredo United South in a three game series starting May 8 at 6pm at Roma High School.
Head Coach Rene Morales said it felt great moving on to the next round and as they prepared to face Laredo United South.
“We’ve played Laredo United South twice and we’ve beat them twice it was 1-0 and then 7-2,” Morales said. “They’re a good team it seems like they put it all together and we’re just gonna have to play free baseball and throw strikes and hit the ball to win the game.”
Senior Derek Garcia talked about how they handled a tough matchup against La Joya’s number one pitcher.
“He was throwing good, he threw 92 and he was throwing side arm,” Garcia said. “With him we just had to make him throw strikes cause he was getting a little wild, not chase the slider and make him come inside with the fastball and smack the fastball.”
Garcia also talked about the turning point in the game being down 2-0 and coming back up in the fifth inning.
“We wasted all the first pitchers pitches and they had to bring in their #2 guy,” Garcia said. “When they brought in the #2 guy we knew we beat him mentally cause they knew they couldn’t stop us.”
“We were beating the number one guy but we were just hitting it straight to the hands,” Garcia said. “We put the ball to play, put some bunts down got some clutch hits and we went up 4-2.”
Senior Aleck Rodriguez says their weakness with hitting has developed and are hoping to keep it going for the next round.
“We’ve improved a lot in hitting, right after the second game we started hitting and scored 11 runs,” Rodriguez said. “I think going into the next round we have to just keep that same thing, keep our same energy with a lot of intensity like this past round.”
Rodriguez discussed how they handle competition and pressure during high stake games like these.
“We just be ourselves, we’ve been doing this ever since we were very little,” Rodriguez said. “We just have to be ourselves do what we’ve done in practice do what we do every since we were little and we will be alright.”
Senior Joshua Alvear credits the team’s approach for the bi-district wins, and how the mindset they will have against Laredo United South.
“Well we just stayed hard and stayed as a team all together,” Alvear said. “For round two same thing, we just hope to stay together and be able to focus one game at a time.”
Alvear revealed what keeps the team going for this season and why they are so determined to keep going.
“Winning the state title is our number one goal,” Alvear said. “I think that’s what everyone on the team wants and it’s what’s keeping us going, for some of us it being our last year.”
