The Falcon girls and boys golf teams wrapped up their seasons last week after both advancing to the regional tournaments held in San Antonio.
The girls team advanced to regionals after an undefeated season and a dominant first place finish at the district tournament.
Competing at the historic Brackenridge Park Golf Course, the girls put forth a strong effort and represented Los Fresnos High School with pride and determination.
They were led by junior Avy Martinez, who delivered an impressive performance and finished individually top 25 out of almost 100 golfers.
Junior Annali Valdes expressed how while she didn’t play her best she stayed positive, and was very proud of how the team finished.
“The course was tight and challenging and it was hard to push through and stay strong,” Valdes said. “I didn’t shoot my best but I definitely have shown growth mentally. The team did good and Avy particularly did excellent, I think I can speak for the team and say we really appreciate her. We are going to come back next year, stronger, and better prepared. We are committed to practicing harder than ever.”
Coach Zamora praised the performance and growth of the girls throughout the year.
“This was a good experience for the team, especially with four girls returning next year,” Zamora said. “Competing outside of the valley against tougher schools on tougher courses is important for their development. We are so proud of the girls for keeping the tradition of excellence alive by going undefeated and becoming district champions once again.”
The boys team also made an impressive run, finishing 2nd at district to qualify for regionals.
They teed off at SilverHorn Golf Club in San Antonio, giving it their all against some of the best teams in the region.
The boys were led by junior Levi Bennett, whose performance was impressive and steady through the tough conditions.
Bennett expressed disappointment in how he ended the season and feels he should have done better.
“I didn’t play up to my own standards,” Bennett said. “I have high expectations for myself and they should have been met, but I think it fueled a fire in me to work harder and push myself to do better next year. And as a team, during this offseason we need to be focused and committed to getting better.”
Coach Ortega was also let down by how the team finished and stressed that changes need to be made going forward.
“It was bittersweet,” Ortega said. “I’m glad we were able to compete at the regional level, but our performance was below expectations to say the least. We entered the tournament ranked last place and concluded the tournament in the same place. To improve, swing changes need to be made, as well as swing speed, and ball speed.”
“But what we lack the most is commitment, dedication, leadership, and drive to win. We should practice to get better, not to get through the motions of practicing. We need disciplined players, who hold themselves and each other accountable, we need to have heart. Losing should not be fun.” Ortega concluded.
Despite the challenges, both teams capped off a memorable season with strong showing, and they have set a solid foundation for next year.
