The Los Fresnos falcons baseball team has officially started district. After finishing their non-district games 15-3-2, they are so far 2-0 in district.
This year a lot of players and fans have their expectations high for this season. Most of them expect them to get as far as winning district and go to state.
However, this isn’t the first time the boys have seen the district trophy. They have been district champions for three years in a row and are hoping to make it a fourth. The past two years, they have been trying to make it past round two but unfortunately have fallen short.
Head Coach Rene Morales said they hope to get a long run for this season and improve the communication with each other.
“We have a mature team and a lot of returning starters, so we hope to make a long run and hopefully end up in the state championship,” Morales said. “Just the communication and the comradery with each other we have to improve and us playing as a team as one.”
Senior Emilio Martinez said he is looking forward to his last year and the adversity they will face.
“Although we’re a good team, adversity comes whether you are a good team or a bad team,” Martinez said. “I know that no matter what we’re gonna be able to handle it.”
Martinez also said he is looking forward to the length in the playoffs they are hoping to get to.
“We’re expected to do very good and we’re just gonna go out and prove people who we are,” Martinez said.
Martinez stated their maturity helps the team improve during this season.
“As long as we are mature enough, as long as we have our head in the game and every single game we go out to play I think we will be fine,” Martinez said.
Senior Axel Tijerina said he is looking forward to experiencing different games and the long playoff run they are expecting to have as well.
“We should be able to make a very good playoff run with a very good team,” said Tijerina. “That’s what’s expected with this season, not just a district championship, but to make a long playoff run and hopefully make it to state.”
Tijerina stated they need to improve on their leadership as a team as well this season.
“Someone needs to step up and lead the team because that’s where our main struggle has been lately,” Tijerina said.
