As the season nears its peak, the Los Fresnos Falcon golf team is gearing up for one of the most important challenges of the year, the 32-6A District tournament. After months of dedication, practice, and competition, our talented golfers are ready to take on the best in the district and make their mark on the course.
The Falcons will compete at the district tournament on April 3-4 at Treasure Hills Golf Course in Harlingen. The girls golf team has won the district tournament seven years in a row, while the boys are aiming to re-claim the title after winning in 2023, but finishing second in 2024.
The girls team has won every tournament they’ve played in this season, while the boys have been consistently finishing in the top five in every tournament. Both teams have had outstanding individual performances as well. Freshman Isabella Ramirez has won four individual tournaments for the Falcons, while junior Avy Martinez has won two. Junior Levi Bennett has set school records for lowest round (67) and lowest tournament (138, 6 under par) and won the Brownsville tournament in November.
Head Coach Agapito Ortega described the key skills and techniques the team is working on right now to prepare for the district tournament.
“Consistency and course management skills, and playing smart golf,” Ortega said.
Ortega stated what he thinks his girls team needs to do to win district for the 8th year in a row and what the boys team needs to reclaim the district title.
”The girls just need to show up and do what they’ve been doing all year,” Ortega said. “They’re having a great year, they’re undefeated this year, so as long as they show up and have a good tournament like they have all year long, they’ll be fine they’ll get the eighth title in a row. For the boys we need to limit our mistakes, and we need our top three players to have three very good rounds, and then our last two guys need to have a decent round. Together we need to limit our mistakes and play smart, and that should allow us to have both teams boys and girls to be district champions.”
Senior Marco Garza stated how he and the team are looking to earn a distinct title back this year.
“We’re gonna work hard for it,” Garza said. “Levi Bennett is gonna lead the team with another win. Our work ethic is good, we’re gonna win this district tournament.“
Garza also stated what he learned from last year’s district tournament when they got 2nd place.
“We learned that every shot counts, and that you have to take it very seriously both days not just the last day, cause we got taken off guard the first day last year,” Garza said.
Martinez stated what her and the team are doing to try and win the the eighth straight district title.
“We practice everyday, we constantly work on improving our game in and outside of school, and we’re aware that the district title isn’t just gonna be handed to us and that we need to work on our game to be able to win,” Martinez said.
After winning the individual district title last year, Martinez described that it will be a challenge to repeat this year.
“Winning district last year was a really big accomplishment, and I know it’s not going to be easy to do it again, but I’ve been focusing on my game and I know that if I trust myself and my game and I do everything I can to be able to win it, I know I’ll have a good shot at doing it again,” Martinez said.
