The Los Fresnos Falcons weren’t ready for their season to end just yet.
In a dominant Bi-Distict playoff victory, the Falcons defeated Edinburg Economedes 42-13, displaying their determination and teamwork that made them 32-6A District Champions. Now, they’re gearing up for the next challenge in the Area Round vs the Buda Johnson Jaguars on November 23 at the San Antonio Alamodome.
Head Coach David Cantu explained what the team did so well against Edinburg Economedes that led to such a dominant victory.
“The team just came out and were themselves and played loose and had fun,” Cantu said. “In the first drive, Economedes really did well, but there was a really big turnover. Josh Laster had an interception, and then the offense went down and scored. Everything settled down, so we weathered the storm and settled into ourselves.”
After the victory over Economedes, the team has been preparing for the showdown against Buda Johnson. Buda Johnson defeated Laredo United 41-14 in the Bi-District round.
“Buda Johnson is a really strong football team,” Cantu said. “Defensively, they’re very physical and they take pride in stuffing the run. They have some individuals with great athleticism on offense. They are a shotgun team that like to run the football a lot. They definitely use the run to set up the pass, and their running back Hatnot led their district in touchdowns, so it’s going to be a chore to stop him and the others.”
Junior wide receiver Lucky Perales has been watching film on Buda Johnson as the Falcons receivers prepare to go against the Buda Johnson secondary.
“From what we’ve seen, they’re physical and fast, so once they man us up we just have to do our best and beat them off the line and score,” Perales said.
Senior safety Cade Stumbaugh detailed the team’s strategy going into this week’s matchup.
“Just to be physical, just to play and do our job so we can come out with a win,” Stumbaugh said. “It’s a blessing to play in the next round. It feels really great to have another week with the team and just continue to play football in general. It’s a blessing.”
