Lyle and Eric Menendez were convicted of the murder of their parents, Jose and Mary Menendez in August 1989. The brothers were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, this is predicted to change, as a Los Angeles district attorney argues that the Menendez brothers should be resentenced with the finding of new evidence.
At the beginning of the murder case, the Menendez brothers were not suspected as they claimed to have found the bodies of their parents and due to the severe brutality of the murder was first believed to be mob-related. Jose and Mary Menendez were found with multiple gun wounds leaving them disfigured. After the death of their parents, some found their spending habits questionable as they spent more than half a million the following month after their parents’ deaths.
They later confessed to a therapist on recording that they killed their parents leading to their conviction. They were arrested and later sent to trial in 1993. It was later found that the brothers were both subjugated to emotional and sexual abuse by their father, and their mother was rather incompetent, as she was left defenseless.
Regardless of the confessions, they provided details of the horrific experiences that they endured with their parents. The brothers were not given much sympathy, however, and were sentenced to life in prison with no parole. As the case rose in popularity in social media and became a Netflix adaptation called “Monsters,” many pushed for reopening the case. Now with recently released evidence concerning the case being presented the brothers applied for a review of the case and it seems to have a high chance of initiating a resentencing. The evidence is an old letter by Erik detailing the abuse he endured.
