The Los Fresnos Falcon Varsity Football team is gearing up for district play this week, on the heels of a dominating 70-33 victory against the Sharyland Rattlers in the Homecoming game on October 4.
The team improved its record to 5-1 as it is set to begin district play at home against the San Benito Greyhounds on October 18.
Head Coach David Cantu said he was pleased with the progress the team made during the win over Sharyland.
“I’m proud of the guys because the first half we had a lot of adversity,” Cantu said. “Sharyland has a very explosive offense and they were scoring quickly, but we were able to respond by keeping up with them. Then in the second half, offensively we were able to keep the momentum going but defensively really, really bear down and we adjusted to some of the things Sharyland was doing.”
After the big win over the Rattlers, Cantu is looking forward to district play starting this week.
“Just a tenacity, a hunger to get on the field, a confidence that we can defeat anybody as long as we all do our jobs cause it’s gonna be a great challenge but it’s something I feel like our boys are up to,” Cantu said.
Junior Quarterback Robert Pineda said he was satisfied with his performance vs the Rattlers. Pineda was named the “Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week” for week six after totaling eight total touchdowns in the win.
“My performance was good, but I think it was a whole team effort offensively, defensively and special teams wise,” Pineda said. “We had big plays on all three phases of the ball, so it was a whole team effort.”
Senior wide receiver Josh Limon detailed that the team hopes to improve on before district.
“Being aggressive off the ball for offense and defense, and special teams just giving our all every play,” Limon said.
Limon hopes to end his career by capturing the district crown.
“I would really like for us to have a gold ball by winning district,” Limon said. “On a personal note, I need to improve my skill-set like catching the ball, running routes, and anything else I can do to help the team overall.”
Senior outside linebacker Trey Betz explained what he hopes to achieve with the team with district beginning this week.
“We hope to really set the standard as we are, because I feel that we’re definitely a new team since the off season,” Betz said. “It was a new approach for us this season, so I feel like we definitely wanted to find see that we’re a new team and that we belong in the race for the district title. We hope to go into the playoffs on a strong note, not by just barely making it, but by dominating.”
