The hidden treasures of a mighty shipwreck are said to be soon discovered.
The San Jose was a 64-gun three-masted galleon that launched from Panama in 1698 and sank in battle off of Baru island, located in the peninsula of Colombia. This ship carried 600 passengers and contained immense amounts of gold and riches. With its large build and holding large amounts of treasures, the San Jose was nicknamed the “Holy Grail of Shipwrecks.”
In 2015, the San Jose was found lying 3,100 feet below sea level by the Colombian government. Although the ship was on the ocean floor for more than 300 years, the ship was still kept preserved. Along with the ship being perfectly preserved, its treasures were still intact. The total amount of treasure from the San Jose shipwreck comes out to a whopping 17 million.
The rights to the San Jose Galleon have been claimed by Columbia after a legal battle with Spain.
Recently, the Colombian government announced that the shipwreck worth $17 billion is soon to be recovered. This ship is said to contain 11 million gold coins and 200 tons of silver and emeralds.
Although people are anticipating what this amazing recovery will bring, the Colombian government has still not announced what they plan on doing with the recovered treasures.
