Throughout high school, you are required to take four classes to graduate. These four classes are your “core” classes and they consist of four subjects: Math, English, Science and History. Most people ask themselves “why do we need to take these classes?,” I know I have, so I’m here to set the record straight.
The state of Texas makes these four classes required to ensure that all students take and complete courses that are considered to be academically and culturally essential, making high school core classes the backbone of education, providing essential skills and knowledge that are fundamental for success in both academic and real-world settings.
It is through core classes that students gain an understanding of various disciplines. English fosters communication skills, critical thinking, and literacy. Mathematics teaches problem-solving and logical reasoning. Science introduces students to the scientific method and basic principles of the natural world. Social studies provide insights into history, geography, and societal structures.
The combination of these subjects builds a solid foundation of knowledge that will be beneficial to further academic pursuits as well as lifelong learning in the future.
