These past months students at Los Fresnos High school have been rigorously competing in UIL with other schools in the valley for a secure spot on their events varsity team.
UIL is a competition in which schools compete between each other in certain academic events.
There are a variety of events including calculator, number sense, science, debate, spelling, literary criticism, ready writing, and headlining.
These dedicated students and coaches wake up at six in the morning on Saturdays to represent their school.
With multiple students from Los Fresnos placing first in recent meets, this makes Los Fresnos the school to fear.
With district coming soon, coaches are already deciding who will make the varsity team for their event keeping attendance, grades, and character in mind.
With the days becoming closer and shorter, tension and competition amongst competing students rise.
Sophomore and literary criticism competitor, Miriam Trujillo, spoke on the topic of how she is preparing for district, and upcoming meets.
“I prepare for meets by practicing my Quizlet and going over my written notes on the play and book.” Trujillo said. “I practice hoping to score high.”
The top four students from each event will go on to represent their school in district, regionals, and state.
The next invitational meet will be held in Edinburg North High school on the 24th of February.
These next few invitational meets will decide the final varsity teams who will represent in the upcoming district competition on April 6th.
