The Golden Globes is a prestigious award show that recognizes artists and their work. This 2024, the Golden Globes occurred January 7th ,2024. During the show, there seemed to have been a lot of controversy that occurred. This controversy was mostly started by the host Jo Koy, who seemed to have been very rude and offensive to females that attended the show. The host commented on how he didn’t think the “Barbie” movie was of any importance compared to the movie “Oppenheimer.”
These rude jokes didn’t end there, as he continued to say “The only difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL is that at the Golden Globes we have fewer shots of Taylor Swift.”
Koy attacked Taylor Swift with this comment referring to her relationship with NFL Chiefs Tight End , Travis Kelce. Taylor is known to be at her partner’s games ,and this usually means that she gets a lot of spotlight during these games. In my opinion, It felt like Koy was making fun of Taylor and inferring to others that she only gets her spotlight at her boyfriend’s game due to their relationship and not her success. This was very rude ,which is said that Taylor then was seen taking pictures of this rude host while laughing at him.
The host seemed to enjoy taking down women with his rude comments, which is why he also included a rude comment about the “Barbie” movie. Koy started to present the movie Oppenheimer which he went on about the significance of the movie and how great it was ,but when he got to the Barbie movie he just dismissed its true significance. To quote his words, “Oppenheimer is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project and Barbie is about a plastic doll.”
Koy’s comment on the Barbie Movie was rude not only to the Director Greta Gerwig, but to all the cast and crew that worked so hard on the movie. Everyone who saw the movie, understands how this just proves all the things the director included throughout the movie. Gerwig included the mistreat of women, gender inequality, and the impact society has on a woman. Koy went on to prove that the director was right. She included in her movie that whenever a man does something it is always seen as impressive and “cool,” but when a woman does better or the same thing it is dismissed.
Overall, I consider this “comedian” to be extremely disrespectful. I know that comedians like to make jokes that can be out of pocket sometimes ,but Koy didn’t need to target women with his sexist jokes. I believe that there is a very fine line between being funny and being disrespectful ,and I know that Koy definitely crossed it.
